It all started earlier this year, when Nguwe Wedwa Youth Development Organization's CEO Mbongeleni Mzimela in association with Tzozo Project, a company by businessman and music industry practitioner Tizozo Zulu kickstarted the artist development programme. The programme was made possible by the sponsorships from Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit, Department of Arts and Living Cultures, Community Participation, Spar Winklespruit, Protea Hotel Karridene, and other local businesses in Umgababa and surrounding areas.
In opening the event the Ward 98 Cllr Comrade B J Thabethe encouraged the youth to continue with school while pursuing their music dreams because it would help empower them, prevent them from falling victims of signing contracts that only have the interests of those presenting them. He said being talented is good, but being an educated creative is what we need to grow this sector. He commended Tzozo Project and Nguwe Wedwa Youth Development Organization on this initiative as it helps guide and support the youth in music and arts.
Parks , Recreation and Culture Unit's Mr Themba Mchunu said that this is not the end of the programme, it's a start. He advised the programme finalists to keep on pursuing more knowledge, to put in an extra effort, and to believe in themselves. He said his department is passionate about grooming artists who can well represent us no matter where they find opportunities. He advised them to keep on practicing and staying active beyond the day's event so that they are able to grow and excel.
Mr Hlongwa, the music mentorship team HOD, emphasized the importance of getting an education. He said artists cannot survive on talent alone. He said that it's possible to have a full time career outside the music industry and still pursue music on the side. He said that music is a business , a demanding one at that, artists need to understand this.
Nguwe Wedwa Youth Development Organization's CEO Mbongeleni Mzimela thanked the finalists for partaking in the programme and expressed his joy at their growth since the programme started. Mbongeleni says that the South Coast Mic Check 1 2 programme would return next year with the help of the Department of Arts and Living Cultures, local business and any other funders who would support this youth development initiative.
The day was packed with great dance, poetry, and music performances. Ngabade was a superb Programme Director, he also encouraged the youth to ensure a strong foundation by getting an education.
